NEVER PAY RETAIL FOR COLLEGE: Prep for College Admissions Part II
by Beth V. Walker posted: June 2, 2017
Because most families don’t take a strategic approach to developing the list of schools the student applies to, we find ourselves choosing before knowing the true cost involved. We don’t handle any other six-figure financial decision in life this way. College is different because we don’t think about it in a financial context. Our emotions tend to drive this decision.
Too often, a student applies and is accepted only to have the rug pulled out from under them when the financial aid award package arrives and the family realized they cannot possibly make it work. Before your student completes an application for admission, you should know the probable out-of-pocket cost you are facing for the next four years. You should know whether you can even afford four years at that school. Why pay $75 for the privilege of carefully completing an application that will never result in accepting an offer of admission because of the cost?
